Recovery for carers
05/07/2011

“It was good to be heard” was the comment from Ann after the day’s training on Recovery for Carers run by Alcohol Focus Scotland. The course was developed in close consultation with Marlene Taylor, manager of Families Addictions Support Services in Glasgow after it was indentified that family members living and caring for a loved one with alcohol and drug problems needed some special training and support. The result was ‘Recovery for Carers’ a one day course which proved to be as much about listening to the carers as it was about providing information and skills.
In Glasgow, and indeed throughout Scotland, there are many unpaid and often unacknowledged carers for those with alcohol and substance abuse problems. Research from Australia suggests that if these ‘caring cost’s’ were factored into the cost of alcohol problems, the cost in Scotland for alcohol problems would be doubled, and this is only the financial costs.
FASS in the meantime seeks to offer a place of ‘recovery’ for these carers who are proven to play a pivotal role in the recovery and treatment of their family member. The day’s training was seen as a pilot and discussions are planned to bring the idea of ‘recovery for carers’ further.
