Rory Learning Resource Training

This training workshop will introduce participants to the Rory Learning Resource designed for use with children aged 5 - 11 years old to explore the issue of parental alcohol misuse. The resource aims to encourage open and
‘child-friendly’ discussion on the impact of parental alcohol misuse on children, help children living with a problem drinking parent to fell less confused / guilt, encourage children to talk to a trusted adult and help other children feel compassion and empathy.
Learning outcomes
On completing this workshop learners will:
• Have thought about personal, social and environmental issues relating to alcohol use
• Understand the impact of parental alcohol misuse on children and families
• Be able to identify ways to use the Rory learning resources with children, parents/carers and families
• Be able to use the Rory learning resource to support interventions within their place of work
• Be aware of local and national sources of support for children affected by parental drinking
This workshop is suitable for practitioners working with children and/or families in both specialist alcohol/addiction and generic settings.
Oh Lila Learning Resource Training

This training workshop will introduce participants to the Oh Lila Learning Resource for use with children aged 3 – 5 years old. The learning resource is an early intervention tool and aims to build protective and resilience factors in young children.
Learning outcomes
On completing this workshop learners will:
• Understand how Oh Lila links to national early years strategies
• Understand the key themes in Oh Lila
• Be able to identify ways to use the Oh Lila learning resources to engage with children, parents/carers and families
• Feel confident to use the Oh Lila learning resources in their own working environment
• Have increased awareness of alcohol and its effects
This workshop is suitable for practitioners working with children and/or families in both specialist alcohol/addiction and generic settings.
Group Recovery

This workshop provides a unique opportunity to learn about established and new forms of group recovery and peer support for people with alcohol problems. The day includes input from Alcoholics Anonymous, SMART Recovery, FASS and the developing Circle of Care concept.
Learning outcomes
On completing this workshop learners will:
• Have increased awareness of a range of recovery and peer support options for service users and people maintaining recovery
• Understand the contribution that peer support and mutual aid can make to an individual’s recovery
• Be able to identify and provide advice on options for peer support and mutual aid
Service User Involvement for Frontline Service Providers

The aim of this workshop is to enable frontline service providers to competently and confidently design and deliver service user involvement within their services to improve and evidence outcomes.
Learning outcomes
On completing this workshop learners will:
• Be able to identify effective service user involvement practice
• Be aware of the national policy context relating to service user involvement for substance misuse services
• Know about a range of service user involvement tools and approaches which can be adapted for a wide range of substance misuse services
• Be able to develop and implement service user involvement plans within their services that are appropriate and contribute to outcomes
This workshop is suitable for service managers and frontline staff working in substance misuse services.
Harm to Others

This workshop explores alcohol and its impact on people other than the drinker with a particular focus on children and young people. Participants will consider approaches to reducing alcohol related harm to others.
Learning outcomes
On completing this workshop learners will:
• Understand the range of alcohol related harm, particularly the impact of other people’s drinking on children and young people
• Be aware of the effects of parental drinking on children and young people
• Be confident in raising the issue of parental and/or another family member’s drinking
• Be aware of a range of local and national sources of support and information
This workshop is suitable for anyone working with children and families who may be affected by someone else’s drinking.
Using Directive and Non-directive Approaches with Problem Drinkers

This workshop will introduce the application of a person-centred approach along with a more directive approach to working with problem drinkers.
Learning outcomes
On completing this workshop learners will:
• Understand and be able to use key skills of a cognitive behavioural approach when working with problem drinkers
• Understand and be able to use a person-centred approach when working with problem drinkers to meet the needs and aspirations of the individual
This workshop would be relevant to any frontline service provider with support and caring responsibilities for a problem drinker.
Using Motivational Interviewing with Problem Drinkers

This workshop will introduce the principles and skills of motivational interviewing (MI). MI is an evidence-based skill that includes the active participation of the service users. The workshop will offer examples of this in practice and an opportunity to practice these skills.
Learning outcomes
On completing this workshop learners will:
• Be aware of the knowledge and skills required to deliver motivational interviewing
• Be able to use motivational interviewing to instigate change within problem drinkers
• Understand how motivational interviewing can encourage health behaviour change in individuals
