Alcohol harm is often discussed in the abstract, or via graphs, charts and statistics. But behind these abstract ideas and numbers there are real people who’s lives have been impacted by alcohol harm. Not everyone affected by alcohol is affected by their own drinking. Some people are deeply affected by the alcohol use of someone close to them.

Here, we share the personal stories and reflections of a wide variety of people affected by alcohol harm, whether that’s their own alcohol use or someone close to them.

Content Warning: These stories are written first hand by people who have experienced problems with alcohol and sometimes other drugs. They may use terms to describe people with an alcohol or drug problem which Alcohol Focus Scotland may not use. Many of the stories featured deal with issues that people may find difficult to read, including suicide.

If you are experiencing thoughts about ending your life, or feel unable to keep yourself safe, please call 999 or go to A&E and ask for the contact for your local mental health crisis team.
